Concept Explanation

Water Pollution As Resource Management

Water Pollution:  Water pollution can be defined as the contamination of water bodies. Water pollution is caused when water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater, and aquifers get contaminated with industrial and agricultural effluents.

When water gets polluted, it adversely affects all life forms that directly or indirectly depends on the this as source. The effect of water contamination can be felt for years to come.

Sources of water Pollution  :

The key reasons of water pollution in India are : Urbanization, Deforestation, Use of detergents and Fertilizers, Industrial effluents, Social and religious practices etc. The effect of water pollution depends on the type of pollutants and its concentration. Also, the location of water bodies is an important factor to determine the levels of pollution. Water bodies in the vicinity of urban areas are extremely polluted. This is the result of dumping garbage and toxic chemicals .

How to reduce water pollution :

  • 1. Do not pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a 'fat jar' under the sink to collect the fat.
  • 2. Do not dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet.
  • 3. Do not flush pills, liquids or powder medications or drugs down the toilet.
  • 4. Avoid using garbage disposal. Keep solid waste solid. Make a compost pile from vegetables scraps.
  • 5. Install a water efficient toilet. In the mean time, put a brick or 1/2 gal container in the standard toilet tank to reduce water use per flush.
  • 6. Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Do not dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sewer system.
